Welcome to XboxIssues

Welcome. I decided to make this blog after being a Xbox Ambassador for a number of years.

If you don't know an Ambassador is a Volunteer that Microsoft uses to help ease the load on the actual hard working support people.

I noticed that alot of the questions I would get could easily be solved by using Microsofts Xbox.com site.

Since some of the help articles may be hard to find, understand or the issue may be called something different in the gaming community making it more difficult to solve, I've decided to make this blog to make it easier for fellow gamers to get xbox assistance, news and all things Xbox.

If you have any Xbox related question you can find the answer to feel free to contact me on YouTube, twitter or in the comments.

HOW TO: Use the Offline System Update Diagnostic Tool on Xbox One

You should use the diagnostic tool only to troubleshoot a console that’s having trouble downloading a system update from Xbox Live. Try all other troubleshooting steps first. The diagnostic tool file is a very large file and will take considerable time to complete.

To use the Offline System Update Diagnostic Tool, you’ll need:

Important
This process is designed for troubleshooting use only. If you're updating your system for the first time, you'll still need to connect to the Xbox Live service.
Read these instructions thoroughly before installing the update

First make sure your USB device is formatted as NTSF by following the steps below, if you already know your device is NTFS skip this step.

How to format a flash drive to NTFS on Windows
Before beginning this procedure, you'll need a 2 GB USB flash drive formatted to NTFS.

  1. Important Back up or transfer any files on your flash drive before starting this procedure. The contents of the flash drive will be deleted during the reformat process.
  2. Plug the USB drive into a PC that's running a version of Windows.
  3. Open File Explorer.
  4. Right-click Removable Disc from the left-side navigation.
  5. From the pop-up menu, select Format.
  6. On the Format Removable Disc pop-up menu, you should see a field called File system.
  7. If File system is not currently set for NTFS, select the drop-down menu and select NTFS.
  8. Tap or click Start to begin the formatting process.

On to using the Diagnostic Tool:

Step 1: On your Xbox One console

In order to download the correct system update, you’ll first need to know which OS version you’re currently running.

  1. To find your Xbox One console’s OS version:
  2. Press the Xbox button to return to Home.
  3. Press the Menu button and select Settings (or select Settings on the Home screen).
  4. Select System.
  5. Select Console info.
  6. Your OS version is the third row down. Please document this information so that you can select the correct download in the next step.

Note If you’re in the process of setting up your system for the first time, or in the middle of a system update and need to find your OS version, pull both triggers and press both bumpers on your controller. The OS version is listed as Build and is the second line down.

If you're stuck on the green start-up screen

There are two scenarios in which your console may be stuck on the green start-up animation screen, making you unable to determine which OS version your console is currently on. Review the two scenarios to determine which OSUDT file you should select.

Scenario 1: You have just unboxed your Xbox One console and have powered on for the first time. You see the green start-up animation screen for 10 minutes or longer without transitioning to an image of the Xbox One controller. The OSUDT file you'll want to download is OSUDT1. Continue on to Step 2: On your computer.

Scenario 2: You have just received a system update from Xbox Live. After you download and install the update, the console is forced to restart. After it restarts, the green start-up animation screen lasts for 10 minutes or longer without transitioning to either the next screen in your system setup or to the Home screen, depending on whether this is your first update or a later update. The OSUDT file you'll want to download is OSUDT2. Continue on to Step 2: On your computer.

Step 2: On your computer

  1. Plug your USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
  2. If you have not already formatted the flash drive for NTFS, see How to format a flash drive to NTFS on Windows above.
  3. Important Back up or transfer any files on your flash drive before starting this procedure. The contents of the flash drive will be deleted during the reformat process.
  4. You’ll need to select the correct OSUDT file based on your current OS Version to be able to install properly. Select the OSUDT file in the “File Version” column based on your current OS Version (which you documented in Step 1: On your Xbox One console) to begin the download.

This option is available to all versions of the Xbox One OS
If, after a system update, the console is experiencing an issue that would require you to Restore Factory Defaults, but you're unable to access the Settings hub, you will use this file.
Warning Restoring your console to the factory default settings erases all accounts, apps, games, saved games, and settings. Anything not synchronized with Xbox Live will be lost. Your console syncs with Xbox Live automatically when it is connected with the service.
Restore Factory Defaults

  1. Tap or click Save to save the console update .zip file to your computer.
  2. Unzip the file. If you’re using Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, double-tap or double-click the .zip file to unzip it.
  3. Copy the contents of the .zip file to your flash drive.
  4. Note The files should be copied to the root directory, and there shouldn’t be any other files on the flash drive.
  5. Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.

Step 3: On your Xbox One console

  1. Unplug the network cable if you’re using a wired network connection.
  2. Power off your console, and then unplug the power cord to ensure that the console is completely powered off.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back in.
  5. Plug the flash drive into a USB port on your Xbox One console.
  6. Press and hold the BIND button (located on the left side of the console) and the EJECT button (located on the front of the console), and then press the Xbox button on the console.
  7. Continue holding the BIND and EJECT buttons for 10-15 seconds.
  8. Listen for two “power-up” tones a couple of seconds apart.
Note If you don't hear two power-up tones after 15 seconds, it means this failed. Likewise, if you hear any “power-down” chirps, that also means this failed.

     9.  You can release the BIND and EJECT buttons after the second power-up tone.
     10. When the console restarts, remove the USB drive.
11,Once the console restarts, the update is complete and you should be returned to your experience.

Note The console restart may take several minutes. If you were using a wired connection, plug your network cable back into the console. If you have never connected your console to the Internet, you will need to connect at least once during your system setup process.

About the buttons and beeps

Pressing the BIND and EJECT buttons at the same time forces the console to look for the USB drive update, as the console will not look for a USB drive unless it needs it. This helps to decrease console start times for all startups when this step is not needed.

The first power-up tone will occur approximately 10 seconds after powering up. This indicates that a USB update has been detected. The second power-up tone indicates that the update file has been copied and mounted. This is important, as it confirms you have a compatible Xbox One system update based on your current build. This informs the system which build is currently installed on the console, and whether the update is compatible with that build.

If you still can’t update your console

If you have tried all the troubleshooting steps in the Xbox One System Update Solution, and the Offline System Update Diagnostic Tool has also failed to resolve your system update issue, you'll need to submit a request to have your console repaired.

To submit a repair request, visit the Xbox Online Service Center.
