NEW RELEASES: Kodi for the Xbox One

Kodi, the perfectly legal yet notorious media player, is now available to download on your Xbox One. Initial reports suggest availability is restricted by region with Europeans getting first dibs. So be patient if you don't see it yet.

Kodi is a very capable player that’s highly expandable thanks to third-party add-ons like live TV and DVR services — something Microsoft isn’t going to provide. But Kodi is perhaps best known as the go to app for piracy due to a wide variety of plugins that let you illegally stream television shows, professional sports, and films from the comfort of your living room. This has led to a cottage industry of so-called "Kodi boxes," often built around cheap HDMI dongles like Amazon's Fire TV sticks. While the XBMC Foundation has attempted to distance itself from the illegal third-party plugins, it's also benefited from the exposure.

In a blog post, Kodi warns that the Xbox One download isn’t finished and may contain missing features and bugs. Here are a few known limitations as of today:

• There’s limited access to only part of your Video and Music folders.
• Network support is limited to NFS:// shares.
• There’s no access to attached storage or to the Blu-ray drive.
• There might be problems with some add-ons.

Kodi began life as XBMC (Xbox Media Center), or XBMP (Xbox Media Player) if you want to track back to the original incarnation that ran on hacked first-generation Xbox consoles — a capable PC with high-end graphics that Microsoft sold at a loss in order to gain an industry foothold back in the early noughts. So really, it's only fitting that Kodi should return to the roost.

NEW RELEASES: HBO Now is available on Xbox On and 360

After launching a year ago exclusively on the Apple TV, HBO Now is now available on  the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One.

HBO Now is a $15 per month standalone streaming service that gives you access to HBO's large catalog of original shows, documentaries, movies, comedy specials and boxing without the need for a cable subscription.

Interestingly enough, you won't be able to sign up for HBO Now via your Xbox, so you have to actually sign up via your iOS or Android device, or through your Verizon and Optimum homepages if you use them as your ISP.

NEW RELEASE APP: Plex streaming app Xbox One

Plex, the home media streaming app, is now available for free on the Xbox One.

To date, the apps were available in beta to Plex Pass customers, but now everyone can get their hands on the core app for free (without some of the features paying subscribers get).

The setup is very quick, and includes creating a Plex account, downloading the media server to your PC/NAS and then downloading the app on your console.

Plex can play nearly any format you have saved and it also catalogs your movies and shows with artwork, descriptions and more.

NEW RELEASE: The Mall (app)

High-tech fitting rooms have been around for quite some time, but most of the gear stays inside a retail location. However, Xbox One owners can now have a personal setup in the comforts of their living room. Thanks to a new shopping app called The Mall, the console's Kinect motion-tracking camera and the software's virtual wardrobe tech drives the in-home fittings. Launching with the help of Von Bismark, a Dublin-based television e-commerce company and veteran of Microsoft Ventures, the shopping platform allows Xbox users to browse for new clothes before standing in front of their TV to try them on in real time.

When you find something you like, you can make the purchase using the PowaTag app. The payments system scans an on-screen (or physical) QR code tag to complete the shopping experience. The Android and iOS software stores your payment and shipping details so you don't have to worry about struggling to enter all of your info with an Xbox controller. The Mall is launching in the States today, with selections from brands like SoccerPro, Style PB, Grayers and Go2Games. Those names are said to be just the beginning as you can expect more variety in the future.

Release: Sling TV Xbox One

Sling TV is basically a service separate from cable that nets you a number of channels for $20 a month, with a few extra special interest packages like sports, kids or news. The base package highlights include AMC, ESPN, Food Network, Travel Channel, CNN, and Cartoon Network, among others.

CEO of Sling TV Roger Lynch thinks the program will be a success, noting “Sling TV and Xbox are a natural pairing; two out of three millennials think of themselves as gamers, while nearly nine out of 10 watch live sports on TV." We'll see about that. While many people are keen on cutting the cord, there are still millions out there who can't live without it -- and with a limited amount of Sling TV channels featuring on-demand or live TV control, it may be harder for those folks to give it up.
